DAILY WINTER WEATHER DISCUSSION ARCHIVE

"A Weather Discussion Blog"

Published 01/25/02 at 10:00 am. The state continues under record breaking to near record breaking warm weather with high temperatures in the 80-86 deg. range. This warm pattern will continue through the rest of the month but look for the overall pattern to reverse itself once again much like in December with a cold and wet pattern returning in February.

-----

Published 01/17/02 at 11:00 am. The cold spot in the state both yesterday and today was 25 and then 29 deg. at Crestview in the non peninsula north.

-----

Published 01/11/02 at 11:00 am. The cold spot in the state early this morning was 27 deg. at Venus in the south central/northern Everglades agriculture region, the third morning in a row. Other notable temperatures include Archbold at 29 deg. and Brooksville and Inverness at 32 deg. This should be the last day with subfreezing temperatures for a while.

-----

Published 01/10/02 at 11:00 am. As we surmised might happen once again, due to better radiation cooling conditions, with the surface high across the region, the cold spot in the state early this morning was 22 deg. at Venus in the south central/northern Everglades agriculture region. Other notable cold temperatures in the down south were 24 deg. at Archbold, 30 deg. at Ft. Pierce and 32 deg. at Vero Beach. Across the central peninsula Nobleton had 29 deg., Brooksville 31 deg. and Plant City 32 deg. No subfreezing temperatures occurred across the north.

Published Wednesday 01/09/02 at 12:00 pm. As we surmised might happen, due to better radiation cooling conditions, the cold spot in the state early this morning was 18 deg. at Venus in the south central/northern Everglades agriculture region. Other notable cold temperatures were 19 at Nobleton and 20 at Archbold. We should see one more night of freeze and frost though a little warmer, then a warm up for a few days and no folks this was not the "big freeze" that I think will still occur later this month!

Published Tuesday 01/08/02 At 10:00 am. The cold spot early this morning was 20 deg. at Crestview in the panhandle north, 22 deg. at Alachua in the non panhandle north, 24 deg. at Brooksville and 28 deg. at my location here in Plant City on the central peninsula, 32 deg at Archbold on the south central peninsula and 35 at Immokalee in the SW Everglades. The freeze line was basically down to S.R. 80. We decoupled overnight as far as wind and frost was very heavy.

Unless we get a cirrostratus ceiling tonight with the next shortwave diving SE within the 500 mb longwave trough which is doubtful, the south central and northern and SW Everglades agriculture regions will see a hard to significant freeze event tonight.

-----

Published Saturday 01/05/02 at 12:00 pm. A cirrostratus ceiling did develop across the state overnight in advance of the next storm system. A stratocumulus ceiling also penetrated the east central peninsula with 925-850 mb onshore flow. All acted to hold temperatures up overnight but in a heterogeneous manner, with inland areas on and west of the central ridge and into the SW Everglades seeing subfreezing temperatures and widespread frost. The cold spot in the state this morning was 17 deg. at Cross City in the non-peninsula north.

Published Friday 01/04/02 at 8:00 am. The cold spot in Florida at sunrise this morning is 19 deg. at Crestview in the panhandle north. Temps. are as low as 22 on the central peninsula, 28 deg. here in Plant City east of Tampa, with the sub freeze line into the SW Everglades east of Naples. The cold penetrated further south then I figured. Gotta hope for some high clouds in advance of the next storm system and/or some onshore flow during the night from the Atlantic Ocean or the inland south central peninsula citrus belt is in trouble.

Non accumulating snow fell in the Florida panhandle from north of Pensacola east to the Apalachicola River Wednesday 01/02/02 and between Tallahassee and Jacksonville overnight and early this Thursday morning 01/03/02. Snow flurries also fell across non peninsula north and north central Florida as far south as Wildwood in Sumter County, south of Ocala Thursday morning 01/02/02.

Published Thursday 12/27/01 at 12:00 pm. The state experienced strong cold air advection (CAA) yesterday and into the overnight hours this morning, in the wake of a departing east coast surface low pressure system. During the first day of a cold wave CAA is the norm with lot's of wind and clouds. Onshore W-NW flow at the surface and 850 mb advected higher dewpoints and a deck of stratocumulus ashore keeping the west central area of the peninsula west of the ridge warmer overnight. A cirrostratus deck associated with the 175 mph jetstream overhead and ahead of the next weather system also passed across the central and southern peninsula holding up temperatures. Tonight would normally be the coldest night with radiational cooling but enchroaching clouds with the next storm system may hold minimum temperatures up.

PUBLISHED ON SATURDAY 12/02/01 AT 6:00 PM. WELL WE STILL HAVE TROPICAL CYCLONE OLGA NE OF THE BAHAMA ISLANDS AND WE JUST FINISHED WITH THE WARMEST NOVEMBER I CAN EVER REMEMBER IN FLORIDA. COULD IT BE THAT MY COLD WINTER WEATHER FORECAST IS WRONG? NOT!!! WINTER ARRIVES IN THE EASTERN U.S. ON OR AROUND 12/08/01 AND IN FLORIDA ON OR AROUND 12/10/01.

Yes it's true, I posted nothing for almost a month. I took some time off as I'm supposed to be retired from the sado-masochistic profession of weather forecasting and with a positive NAO and only two polar voretex's in the northern hemisphere, there just wasn't anything of significance to prognosticate. I'm still forecasting a whopper of a cold winter for Florida and the Eastern U.S. Stand by and stay tuned, as the last 10-15 days of the December may be very interesting.

Published Wednesday 11/07/01 at 11:00 pm. It was a cold morning across non panhandle north and the north central peninsula early this morning. Some notable minimum temperatures were 32 deg. at Alachua and Bell, 33 deg. at Cross City, 37 deg. at Gainesville and Ocala, 38 deg. at Inverness, 40 deg. at Brooksville FAWN, 41 deg. at Brooksville Airport, and 48 deg. in Plant City.

Another cold night is on tap tonight, with similar temperatures expected.

-----

Published Friday 11/02/01 10:00 am. Irregardless of the future path of Hurricane Michelle, cooler weather is headed for Florida for the middle of next week. Looking down the road it looks like colder then normal weather for Florida by mid November, with a freeze period possible into the central peninsula.

-----

Published Sunday 10/28/01 at 10:00 am. As we educasted yesterday evening, clouds and wind held up the temperature overnight, especially on the peninsula. The cold spot was 32 deg. at Crestview in the panhandle north and Alachua in the peninsula north. The cold spot on the central peninsula was 41 deg. at Brooksville and Citra. Other Notable minimum temperatures on the central peninsula include 42 deg. at Plant City, 43 deg. at Archbold and 44 deg. at Balm. It looks like one more cold night tonight, then a steady warm up to above normal temperatures, as we face down a possible tropical cyclone Lorenzo for next weekend!

-----

Published Saturday 10/27/01 at 5:00 pm. It looks like a cirrostratus deck of clouds in association with a jet streak and increasing wind with a second surge of CAA will not allow for perfect radiational cooling conditions and may hold minimum temperatures up over the central peninsula, also with a very dry airmass frost coverage will be light.

-----

Published Saturday 10/27/01 at 11:00 am. It was a chilly morning across the north and central areas this early morning. The cold spot across the north was 36 deg. at Starke and Tallahassee. The cold spot across the central peninsula was 42 deg. at Brooksville.

The inland rural panhandle and north will see subfreezing temperatures, with low 30's and frost into colder areas of the inland rural west central peninsula on Sunday morning 10/28/01.

-----

Published Friday 10/26/01 at 10:00 am. Thursday 10/25/01 was an incredibly warm day for the end of October. At my station in rural west Plant City the max. temp. hit 87 deg. and the min. temp. was a VERY warm 76 deg. By midnight early this morning the temp. dropped to 75 deg.

The cold front did clear my location overnight and this morning dawned cloudy, windy and much cooler and drier, a breath of fresh air. It looks like record or near record breaking cold weather is still in store for the state through Monday 10/29/01. The inland rural panhandle and north will see subfreezing temperatures, with low 30's and frost into colder areas of the inland rural west central peninsula on Sunday morning 10/28/01. High temperatures for Saturday 10/27/01 will stay in the 60's across the central peninsula.

-----

Published Wednesday 10/22/01 at 6:00 pm. Looks like no big changes for the upcoming coldwave that begins arriving early Friday. It's going to be a very noticeable chilldown compared to the mid to high 80 temps. and mid to high 70% humidity, in advance of the cold front. Looks like a squall line of thunderstorms for Thursday 10/25/01.

ETA Model 850 MB Temperature Prog. For Sunday 10/28/01 At 0000 UTC

-----

Published Monday 10/22/01 at 8:00 am. In what may be a very common occurrence for Florida this upcoming winter, it looks like record or near record breaking cold weather is headed for the state for the period Friday 10/26/01 through Monday 10/29/01. The inland rural panhandle and north will see subfreezing temperatures, with 30's and frost into colder areas of the inland rural central peninsula! At this moment Sunday morning 10/28/01 looks to be the coldest.

-----

Published Saturday 10/20/01 at 11:00 am. We are in for a warm and wet period under a progressive to zonal flow, with the substropical jetstream dominating. In the latter part of the upcoming 7-10 day period Florida will return to a much colder weather pattern.

-----

Published Thursday 10/18/01 at 10:00 am. As I surmised yesterday afternoon, clouds and then wind held up overnight minimum temperatures across the central and southern peninsula, especially on the central ridge and east coast locations of the central peninsula. Some selected minimum temperatures for early this morning include 36 deg. at Crestview and Jasper, 37 deg. at Alachua, Bell, Cross City, and Perry, 38 deg. at Tallahassee and 42 deg. at Gainesville. Across the central peninsula 50 deg. at Plant City, 51 deg. at Brooksville FAWN, 55 deg. at Brooksville Airport, 51 deg. at Okahumpka, 52 deg. at Ocala, 52 deg at Ocklawaha, 54 deg. at The Villages, 57 deg at Avalon, Orlando and Ona, 67 deg. at Melbourne on the east coast. It's interesting to note the temperature difference between Plant City and Melbourne at approxmately the same latitude.

-----

Published Wednesday 10/17/01 at 1:00 pm. Quite a cooldown across the peninsula today as a cold front moved across the peninsula during the overnight hours. At local noontime EDT temperatures are up to 20 degrees colder then yesterday. Some selected minimum temperatures for early this morning include 43 deg. at Crestview, 44 deg. at Marianna, Perry and Tallahassee, 46 at Alachua and Gainesville across the north and 54 deg. at Brooksville, 56 deg. at Inverness and Plant City and 61 deg. at Ona across the central peninsula. A note of interest, the cold airmass is only 400 meters deep in Tampa and 1000 meters deep in Talahassee.

For early Thursday morning 10/18/01 minimum temperatures will fall into the 30's and 40's north, 40's and 50's central, 50's and 60's south. Near freezing minimum temperatures are possible across rural inland areas of the north on Thursday morning the 18th.

With a progressive (fast moving) 500 mb flow, a warmup should begin tomorrow, with some cloudiness and wind holding temperatures up some tonight across portions of the central and southern peninsula.

The following two temperature maps are very interesting. They show temperatures along the west side of the peninsula colder then the east side of the peninsula at the same latitude. This is a very common occurrence due windflow airmass trajectory over the western peninsula being over land and the airmass trajectory over the eastern peninsula being over water. Also the 200-300 foot high ridge down the center of the peninsula can block and funnel colder air down it's west flank, especially shallow airmasses. It is common to see minimum temperatures across the inland rural western peninsula as cold as northern areas during the winter. Eastern peninsula temperatures are also tempered somewhat by the nearby Gulfstream.

-----

Published Monday 10/15/01 at 11:00 pm. It looks like another shot of cool fall weather is on the way, with minimum temperatures in the 30's and 40's north, 40's and 50's central for Wednesday/Thursday mornings the 17/18th. Near freezing minimum temperatures are possible across rural inland areas of the north on Thursday morning the 18th.

-----

Published Sunday 10/02/01 at 9:00 am. Florida has experienced it's first taste of cooler fall weather during the past 5 days. Minimum temperatures include 40 deg. at Crestview, 44 deg. in Tallahassee, 46 deg. in Gainesville and Ocala, 47 deg. in Brooksville and 52 in Plant City.
