NOTES-
Here on the south side of Lakeland May was cooler and drier than normal. This is the fourth month in a row with below normal temperature, following December 2006 and January 2007, which together were the warmest since the El Nino winter of 1982-1983.
On the 3rd and 4th we saw an early season mini heat wave, where I observed a maximum temperature of 93 deg. I also saw 92 deg. on the 6th and 13th. In the other extreme I observed a minimum temperature of 53 deg. on the 8th and 59 deg. on the 21st.
On the 6th a tornadic thunderstorm just missed my location to the south. On the 13th hail of up to 1.00" in diameter fell across a wide swath of the south and west side of Lakeland. Fortunately it missed my location by approximately 1/2 mile. Rainfall totals of up to 2.00" fell on the north and east side of Lakeland.
On the 7th through the 12th local visibility was at times reduced to 1/4 mile or less from heavy choking smoke emanating from a large fire in SE Georgia and also NE Florida. For a good number of days 200+ wild fires burned simultaneously across the state, with at least one in each of the 67 counties.
The 2007 Atlantic Basin Tropical Cyclone season got off to an early start with the formation of STS Andrea NE of Jacksonville on the 9th. On the 30th we also had a tropical disturbance brewing in the western Caribbean Sea region. If a weak La Nina does form late in the summer, I'm afraid that this season is going to rival or even surpass 2004 and 2005 for activity. We could see a collapse of the insurance industry in the state.
