NOTES-
Here on the south side of Lakeland January was slightly warmer than normal and slightly wetter than normal. The warmer and wetter than normal month is the second in a row. December 2006- January 2007 together was the warmest since the El Nino winter of 1982-1983.
Nineteen days saw average temperature above normal, thanks to repeated periods with surface high pressure ridging and mid and upper level blocking high pressure in the vicinity of the state. The month saw nine days with a maximum temperature above 80 deg., with the highest being 84 deg. on the 26th. The month also saw five days with maximum dewpoint temperatures above 70 degrees, with the highest being 71 deg. on the 8th.
No minimum temperature of 32 deg. or lower occurred during the month. During a normal winter pattern this would be an incredibly warm anomaly. However in an El Nino winter such as we are in it is normal. The last January without a minimum temperature of 32 deg. or lower was in 1998, another El Nino winter. As an example of an extreme in the other direction January 1981 saw seventeen days with minimum temperatures of 32 deg. or lower.
